Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette offers support for federal AG pick Jeff Sessions
LANSING — Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette took to social media Friday to praise President-Elect Donald Trump's choice for attorney general.
Senator Jeff Sessions has come under fire by many leading Democrats with accusations that he is "racist" because of congressional hearings 30 years ago when he could not get confirmed for a judicial position. Among the accusations at the time was that he had used racial slurs.
Sessions has long denied the accusations.
"Senator Jeff Sessions has a solid background and a broad range of experience, including as a state Attorney General, U.S. Attorney, and decades as a U.S. Senator. Senator Sessions is a strong choice for U.S. Attorney General by President-elect Donald J. Trump," Schuette posted on his Facebook page.
Schuette supported Trump during both the Republican primary and the general election, but his fellow Republican Governor Rick Snyder did not endorse Trump. Michigan's governor joined many prominent Republicans in snubbing Trump.
Schuette raised his profile for a possible run for governor in 2018 by getting an invitation to speak at the Republican National Convention last summer. He has also been prominent in state-wide news by leading an investigation into lead poison in Flint's water system that has led to nine indictments of state employees and one official at Flint's water plant. He was elected as the state's attorney general in 2010, and re-elected in 2014. Schuette previously served as a United States Congressman, Director of the Michigan Department of Agriculture, Michigan State Senator and as a Judge of the Michigan Court of Appeals.
