Michigan Wolverines' pair nab weekly honors in Big Ten softball

(CCN) — The Michigan Wolverines saw their 4-0 week rewarded with two stars named in the Big Ten Conference's weekly softball honors. Slugger Tera Blanco was named Big Ten Player of the Week while pitcher Meghan Beaubien was named as Co-Freshman of the Week winner.

Senior Blanco had a .600 batting average to lead the Wolverines to a 15-0 non-league victory over Detroit Mercy and a three-game sweep over Big Ten rival Purdue. Blanco smacked three home runs and had 10 RBI. She drilled two of the homers in a mercy run rule ending in the middle game of UM's series with Purdue and stroked a grand slam shot in the series finale.

Beaubien shared Freshman of the Week honors iwth Rachel Lewis of Northwestern. UM's lefty pitcher from Saint Mary Catholic Central racked up 25 strikeouts in 17 1/3 innings of work. She twirled a no-hitter and hit a batter in the 5th inning to lose a perfect game bid in the series opener against Purdue. She struck out 8 batters to run her record to 18-2 on the season as the Wolverines won 4-0. Beaubien went 4 innings in a mid-week victory over Detroit Mercy when combining on a no-hitter.

Lewis led Northwestern with a .333 bating average to lead the Wildcats to three Big Ten victories in a five starts last week. She scored seven times and had 8 RBI. Her big day came against Illinois when drilling two home runs in the opener of a doubleheader and smacking a grand slam homer in the nightcap.

The Michigan Wolverines and the Michigan State Spartans have non-league tune-ups scheduled this week before resuming Big Ten competition with three-game sets this weekend. UM goes to Penn State while MSU will host Minnesota. UM is off to a 4-1 start in Big Ten action while MSU is 1-5 in Big Ten action.

Michigan has a Wednesday non-league contest scheduled for Wednesday at 6 pm against neighboring Eastern Michigan University at Alumni Field inside the Wilpon Complex in Ann Arbor. MSU is scheduled to host Notre Dame in a 6 pm date at Seccia Stadium.

The Wolverines, riding a four-game winning streak after a 17-game winning streak was snapped on March 23 against Iowa, have a 28-7 overall record and hold down the No. 17 national ranking in the latest USA Today/NFCA poll. They are set to open their weekend Big Ten series Friday in State College at 6 pm against a Penn State club that is 2-4 so far in Big Ten competition and 6-23 overall. The teams are scheduled for a 3 pm Saturday start and a 1 pm start on Sunday.

Games on Saturday and Sunday are set for 1 pm. Minnesota has a 3-2 record so far in Big Ten play to trail only unbeaten Indiana and once-beaten UM and Maryland.

Big Ten leader Indiana (6-0) is scheduled to host Nebraska this weekend in a three-game series. The Cornhuskers have a 3-3 record in early Big Ten play.

Michigan Wolverines blank Purdue 6-0 for softball sweep

ANN ARBOR (CCN) — Tera Blanco capped off a weekend of torrid hitting by blasting a grand slam home run to highlight a five-run uprising in the bottom of the 5th inning as the Michigan Wolverines blew open a 1-0 game to beat Purdue 6-0 Sunday afternoon. UM's fourth victory in a row came in front of 1,070 fans at Ann Arbor's Alumni Field inside the Wilpon Complex and completed a three-game sweep of their weekend series with the Boilermakers.

Michigan improved to 4-1 in the Big Ten Conference and 28-7 overall.

The Wolverines, who were ranked No. 17 in last week's national poll by USA Today/NAFC Coaches, beat Purdue by a mercy rule ending on Saturday when Blanco blasted a game-ending home run. Blanco, who counts a team-high 8 home runs, belted that blast into Ray Fisher Stadium behind Alumni Field to spark UM's baseball players to exit their dugout and celebrate on their field between games.

Sunday's grand slam shot boosted Blanco's team-high RBI total to 31 to continue her outstanding senior season. The California native was also walked twice on the day intentionally while going 1-for-2 to improve her batting average to a sizzling .351 clip.

Blanco also gave Coach Carol Hutchings 3 2/3 innings of shutout pitching before yielding to freshman lefty Meaghan Beaubien. Blanco allowed only three hits in her 11th start of the season — lowering her earned run average to 1.50. Beaubien surrendered only one hit over the final 3 1/3 innings of work to record the victory — her 20th of the season against only two losses.

Blanco left the circle with a 1-0 lead that was produced when sophomore Madison Uden from Glendale, Arizona, ripped a RBI double to put UM on the board in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Uden's RBI double followed a first-pitch, lead-off double by freshman Lou Allen.

   UM NOTEBOOK:

HOT HITTING PAIR : Uden was 1-for-2 on the day to improve her batting average to a lofty .364 mark — second on the team behind only junior Californian Faith Canfield's .418 average. Canfield was 2-for-4 on Sunday to lead UM's 8-hit attack. She extended a hitting streak to 16 consecutive games with at least one hit.

NO PLACE TO PUT HER: After intentionally walking Blanco twice in a row, Purdue Coach Boo DeOliveira had no place to put her in the 5th inning. The Wolverines loaded the bases on back-to-back singles by Canfield and junior Californian Natalie Peters to set the stage for Blanco with one out.

HOMER TEAR: Blanco's grand slam blast was her third home run in two games. Blanco connected with the first pitch and drove it deep into the grandstand beyond right field. She went 6-for-8 during the Purdue series with 10 RBI.

CANFIELD COUNT: Canfield's three-game series stats also showed a six-hit weekend. She ripped a RBI single to give UM a 2-0 lead after junior catcher Katie Alexander of Ypsilanti ripped a lead-off single and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by freshman shortstop Natalia Rodriguez of Florida.

BEAUBIEN FLAMES: The freshman lefty from Newport's Saint Mary Catholic Central entered the game on Sunday with two outs and the bases loaded in the 4th inning. She provided shutout ball the rest of the way to improve her record to 20-2. Beaubien struck out six Boilermakers and walked only one.

PURDUE CHECK: The loss dropped Purdue to 1-5 in Big Ten action and the Boilermakers dipped to 8-27 overall on the season.

LOOKING AHEAD: UM hosts neighboring Eastern Michigan on Wednesday at Alumni Field inside the Wilpon Complex. Game time for the non-league contest is scheduled for 6 pm. UM then heads to Pennsylvania's College Station this weekend for a three-game Big Ten series against Penn State. EMU is 4-26 overall while Penn State is 6-23 overall with a 2-4 start in Big Ten play.

Bats come to life as Michigan Wolverines erupt for 11-1 mercy rule victory over Purdue to move record to 3-1 in Big Ten Conference softball

ANN ARBOR (CCN) —  The Michigan Wolverines erupted for an 11-1 college softball victory on Saturday over the Purdue Boilermakers in front of 1,171 fans inside Alumni Field at the Wilpon Complex in Ann Arbor behind two home runs by Tera Blanco. Blanco, UM's senior first baseman, ended the game via the mercy rule when belting a three-run blast after drilling a memorable solo shot an inning earlier when the ball landed on the baseball field inside Ray Fisher Stadium behind UM's softball complex. The blast prompted UM's baseball players to empty their dugout in celebration for Blanco between games in their doubleheader there with Delaware. Blanco was 3-for-3 and collected four RBI while improving her batting average to .343. She had a two-run single to go with the two homers that ran her season count to 7 home runs. She leads the Wolverines with 27 RBI.

Pair of heartbreaking 3-2 losses in doubleheader with Indiana drops MSU out of Big Ten race

EAST LANSING (CCN) — The Indiana Hoosiers crushed Michigan State's college softball title hopes in Big Ten Conference regular season play by taking a couple of 2-1 decisions in a doubleheader Saturday at Secchia Stadium in East Lansing. The Spartans, bringing in a 1-2 record, dropped to a 1-4 mark to disappear from the championship chase. Indiana improved to 5-0 in Big Ten play. "We were right there in both games," said MSU Coach Jacquie Joseph afterward. "The tying run was on base in the 7th inning in the second game. We pitched well enough to win both games but didn't capitalize when we had runners on base. We're still looking for that consistency of producing offense and strong pitching performances."

She twirled a two-hitter when going the distance in the opener and also went all the way in the series finale when tossing a four-hitter at the Buckeyes.
